Pediatric Therapy for Reflex Integration
in Lake Zurich, IL

Does it feel like your child is constantly in motion and struggles to sit still long enough to finish a meal or complete a school assignment? Do they seem jumpy or easily startled, or frequently trip as they walk or play? These challenges may be a sign that your child is struggling with reflexes they relied on as a baby that their body no longer needs.

Our therapists at Infinity & Beyond Pediatric Therapy use targeted, evidence-based techniques to address these reflex patterns and help your child move with greater control and confidence during everyday activities.

What Are Reflexes?

Every child is born with automatic reflexes that help them develop during their first months of life. These are called primitive reflexes. For example, when you touch a baby’s palm, they automatically close their hand to grasp. This reflex helps them build early hand strength and coordination.

As your child grows, their brain develops more advanced control over their movement. When that happens, these early reflexes should integrate, or change from being automatic responses to ones your child can control. For example, the grasp reflex mentioned above should give way to more controlled hand movements so your child can hold toys, feed themselves, write, and so on.

Because reflexes are part of the nervous system, they can affect multiple areas of your child’s development at once, including attention, fine motor skills, posture, and overall coordination.

What Is Reflex Integration?

Sometimes, early reflexes don’t integrate fully. And when certain reflexes remain active longer than expected, they can influence how the brain and body communicate, which makes coordinated movement more difficult.

Reflex integration therapy focuses on helping your child’s nervous system learn to move beyond these automatic patterns. This is possible because of neuroplasticity, or the brain’s ability to change and adapt over time.

Through specific, guided movements and targeted sensory input, our therapists can help your child practice new ways of moving and responding. Over time, and with enough repetition, the brain begins to recognize these new movement patterns and use them more consistently in everyday life.

Signs Your Child May Be Experiencing Reflex Integration Challenges

Your child may be experiencing reflex integration challenges if they:

  • Fidget, squirm, or have difficulty staying still for extended periods
  • Tend to be easily startled
  • Appear clumsy or uncoordinated
  • Struggle with hand-eye coordination
  • Become tired quickly during physical activity
  • Have trouble sitting upright or maintaining balance

How Does Therapy Help with Reflex Integration?

At Infinity & Beyond Pediatric Therapy, we use targeted, hands-on interventions to support reflex integration and help your child’s nervous system move beyond those automatic movement patterns that may be holding them back.

Through specific, guided movements and repetition, we help your child practice new ways of moving and responding to their environment. Over time, this helps their body rely less on those early reflexes and more on their own choice of how and when to move.

One of the ways we do this is through MNRI® (Masgutova Neurosensorimotor Reflex Integration), a specialized approach that focuses specifically on reflex patterns. This evidence-based technique uses gentle, hands-on work along with guided movement to help your child’s body process and move past retained reflexes. Because it targets how the body responds at a foundational level, it can help support more controlled movement over time.
